    Yes that is right, if you know how to play around with contrast in Microsoft Office Picture Manager, you can darken the record and it should show up the other faint writing also.

    Thanks to everyone for your help. Just dug out a photo of him in uniform so I'm hoping to find out what regiment he was in.
