    Default CLAUD SPENCER HART 1880-1952

This new thread links to previous threads on Jewish Roots relating to Hart lines in the UK and Australia - see Hart,Simmons, Thorley, Whelan UK and Australian Links; Percy Horace Underwood-Possibly Percy Hart. This post provides a range of data on Claud Spencer Hart 1880-1952 son of Nathan Hart aka James Nathan Hart and Kate Theresa Whelan. It is the paternal line of Claud Spencer Hart through his father Nathan that is the Jewish line.
As a very brief summary, Nathan Hart father of Claud was born 17 August 1849 at 15 Earl St Sisson Square Middx son of David Hart and Sarah Simmons. David Hart was the son of John Hart and Elizabeth Jacobs my 3x great grandparents. As previously posted there is significant data on James Simmons and Agnes Thorley the parents of Sarah Simmons- see Cohen and Cassirer website which includes my own data and those of numerous contributors. However, the current data on Claud Spencer Hart is limited as is some of the data on his parents.
Nathan Hart aka James Nathan Hart had two brothers- John and Percy. As will be shown John Hart left bequests to Claud's children.
When James Nathan Hart 1849-1920 died he left probate. From the Sydney Morning Heralad 19 March 1920- James Nathan Hart gentleman late of Rose Bay Flats, Rose Bay died Feb 12 sworn value of estate for probate £143,271. Testator appointed John Hart his brother and William Thomas Rathbone to be trustees. He directed £500 should be paid to each of them. The remainder of his estate he bequeathed absolutely to Claude Hart his son.
When John Hart died in 1939 age 93 he left significant bequests to his grand nephew Hoyte Hart and grand niece Thelma Beatrice SHEEDY- the children of Claud Hart.
The Maitland Daily Mercury Weds 29 March 1939- The Estate of the late Mr John Hart who died aged 93 last January has been sworn for probate at £357,000 nett. Mr Hart was a member of an old Sydney family which once had very large interests in Sydney real estate including sites in the business centres of the city. By his will Mr Hart left annuities to a number of former employees and friends. To his grand nephew Mr Hoyte Hart and grand niece Mrs Thelma Beatrice Sheedy he left annuities of £500 each. The corpus of the estate passes eventually to the children of Mr Hoyte Hart and Mrs Sheedy.
The newspaper comment regarding John Hart coming from an old Sydney family interestingly ignores the fact ( or was unaware) that the origins of the wealth came from James Simmons who was a Jew and transported convict and father of Sarah the mother of Nathan, John and Percy. James had re-established himself in NSW and became a wealthy business man.
    I will add more.

Claud Spencer Hart was born Waverley NSW 1880. There is no current data to indicate what happened to him following the death of his mother in 1886. However, his father was to re-marry in 1893 Paddington NSW to Lizzie Holle. Default HOYTE AND THELMA HART

The children of Claud Spencer Hart and Beatrice Lottie Matthews were Hoyte Hart and Thelma Beatrice Hart. I cannot locate GRO Birth Records for them although the 1911 British Census indicates that both children were born in the UK.
The 1911 British Census RG14 6725 326 (Crown Copyright,TNA) -"Kia Ora" Clifford Grove Ashford Middlesex

Beatrice had been born July qtr 1878 St Columb Cornwall.
The family returned to Australia date unknown and it appears from the various Australian Electoral Rolls that Beatrice was separated from Claud because there is no record of him living at the same address. Hoyte John Hart 1905-1992 married Australia Hilda Florence Gilbert in 1931 Sydney NSW. She was the daughter of Charles JP Gilbert and Emily F b 1907 Dubbo. There are at least 3 children from the marriage who are likely to be living. Thelma Beatrice Hart married Frank Norman William Sheedy North Sydney 1931 but appear to have divorced early- NSW Divorce Records 1932-1934. I have no records of any children nor whether she re-married.
Claud died in 1952. The Sydney Morning Herald Weds 5 Nov,1952 published his Estate summary details- In the Estate of Claude Spencer John Hart late of Parramatta NSW of independent means deceased. Default LIZZIE HOSKINS-RUDOLPH HOLLE

This post adds data on Elizabeth aka Lizzie Hoskins who was married first to Rudolph Sydney Holle and on his death to James Nathan Hart. Lizzie Hoskins had married Rudolph Holle in Sydney NSW 1885. Records show they had two children- Rudolph F Holle b 1887 Woollhara NSW and Nellie Louise Holle b Sydney 1889. The death of Rudolph Holle was reported in several Australian newspapers and in the Coroner's Inquest records NSW. The Barrier Miner Tues 5 March 1889 NSW reported the death by suicide of .."Rudolph Holle son of a well known tailor died in St.Vincent's Hospital through taking a quantity of the poison known as "Rough on Rats". The Sydney Morning Herald Tues 5 March 1889 reported that Rudolph Holle was age 28 a married man residing 14 Craigend St Darlinghurst. He left a widow and 1 child. He was employed as a clerk in his father's tailoring establishment.
The Sydney Morning Herald Sat 15 June 1889 also reported - Birth on June 13 at her residence 69 Womerah Ave the widow of the late Rudolph S Holle of a daughter.
A much later newspaper advertisement sought information on James Hoskins or Hoskings the brother of Elizabeth who married Rudolph Holle and subsequently one Hart, and who died presumably in England. The Public Trustee in the Estate of Norman Percival Holle. The Sydney Morning Herald Sat 23,1944. There is data on both the children of Lizzie Hoskins nee Holle nee Hart in various records both in Australia and the UK.
I have no current information on what happened to Lizzie and it appears that she may have separated from James Nathan Hart. Interestingly, The Sydney Morning Herald Tues 2 April 1901 carried an advertisement for the sale of property belonging to James N Hart JP due to his imminent departure to England. Why James, his son Claud and later John Hart all returned to England is not known and similarly why they relocated back to Australia is not clear.

Default JAMES NATHAN HART FIRST MARRIAGE

The NSW Marriage Certificate for James Nathan Hart and Kate Theresa Throsby nee Hoskins-1875
20 May 1875 St Charles Waverley
James Joseph Hart bachelor b London Gentleman 24 usual place of residence Waverley father's name G Hart; Mother's name Sarah Ada Symons
Kate Teresa Throsby widow father's name James Warburton; mother's name Julia Kelly
Married in the Church of Saint Charles, Waverley according to the rites of the Roman Catholic Church
Witnesses: Thomas A Gormas? Ellen Louisa Gormas?

Interestingly, the certificate shows James using a middle name of Joseph which from memory maybe the Hebrew name for his father John who had died in 1865. The Symons spelling for his mother Sarah also reflected an earlier spelling of the family surname. Where the initial G for James's father came from is unclear but suggests he didn't know the full or real name for his father David.

My error. I should have said that the use of the middle name of Joseph by James on his marriage certificate is not clear since his father David did not have a known middle name and James's grandfather who died in 1865 Hebrew name was Jacob- see Cemetery Scribes Person ID 3627 for the tombstone of John Hart- Mr Jacob bar Benjamin
