I am trying to research an Ann E locke who in 1861 was living in 14 lock's square Lambeth as an unmarried dressmaker with her two nephews. By 1871 she was a widow living at 20 wood street Lambeth with her son Charles Henry Locke b 1863.Charles's birth certificate says his mother was Ann Thurgood and father William Locke journeyman stonemason. By 1872 when she died she was registered as an Elizabeth Sharmer and her son's name was changed to Sharmer but I cannot find a marriage certificate for Locke to Sharmer.
I believe she was never married and the father on the birth certificate was made up as I cannot find a marriage for William Locke and Ann Thurgood. However I am struggling to establish why her surname was changed between 1871-1872.
Any help appreciated
thanks
Lynne
