He would appear to be on the 1851 census HO107/2100/297/11 for Union House, New Sleaford, Lincolnshire
He is described as the 10 year old son of the Master, Edward Page (45) and his wife Mary (44), the matron. The next two children are much younger and with the surname Page. Was Mary Samuel's mother, who later married Edward Page?Sue Mackay

Marriage registration in March qtr 1847 at Sleaford reg district of an Edward PAGE and one of the other names on the page is that of a Mary Maria Alderson COLCHESTER.
There is a family tree on Ancestry for Samuel Hare COLCHESTER - is this yours? If not, it could be worth contacting the owner.

Free BMD shows deaths for Samuel C of Bosmere, Suffolk in the 3rd quarter of 1844 and the 2nd quarter of 1848, also Robert Osborne C in the second quarter of 1848. Sadly there's no ages provided, but any of them could have been his father....
also the birth of Samuel Hare C, 1st quarter of 1841 in Bosmere, Suffolk.
There's also death of Samuel Colchester, Oct 1841 Tendring, Essex.
However, the 1841 census only has 1 Saml Colchester (b. abt 1786, Suffolk), living with Anna abt 1796) so most of those deaths could be children.
(Life's much easier with Scotlands People's amount of info!)

I cannot find any Immigration/Emigration records online for Samuel nor can I find a Passport application for him but the years 1857 & 1858 are missing. He is in the 1841 census of Needham, Bosmere (HO107/1018/6, folio 24, page 6) with father Samuel & mother Mary, Samuel snr being described as aged 25?, a Grocer? and not born in the county of Suffolk.

He apparently married in Cradock, Eastern Cape, in April 1861, so he emigrated between 1851 and 1861. I have looked for him in Esme Bull's Aided Emigration 1857-1867, but no joy I'm afraid. However, that only applied to assisted passages.

Thanks a mil!, most info in a year of research
Could Samuel be listed on a passenger list as "Page"?
Any possible passenger list to Algoa Bay SA

I did think of that and looked under Page in Esme Bull's book. The problem is that ordinarily passenger lists aren't available prior to 1890, except for those that occasionally appeared in newspapers. Even these are incredibly frustrating, as they tend to list a handful of first class passengers and then say "and 256 in steerage".

Unless it is a very strange coincidence, and that combination of Christian names can't be common, Mary Maria Alderson's maiden name was actually LIND, born 17 Nov 1806 in Brabourne, Kent, and her marriage to Samuel COLCHESTER was her second marriage. She married Edward SOUNDY on 5 Sep 1827 in Ipswich, Suffolk. This is taken from a public tree on Ancestry and needs verification from parish records. The tree lists Mary's parents as Robert Robinson LIND and Elizabeth.
