Hello,
I am trying to add some layers to our tree. It is very short so far only going back to pre WW2 at best.
We know of a Frederick Gill from Kingston, believed to be married to Beatrice. My Aunt was sent there as a child during summer holidays and the war. Frederick and Beatrice had at least a son named Leonard James and a daughter named Lucy, around 1908 (a rough guess, within 5 years we believe).
We have an old photo of a 4 year old Leonard outside a farmhouse in Kingston with some other children. We believe it might be LangMead Farm? In the 80s my aunt was told that Frederick left Kingston to live with his family in Dawlish. The old bungalow that my Aunt used to stay has been replaced with a larger house, possibly built by a Belgian family (so many anecdotes leading to this information!). We have studied the Gravestones of the Kingston History website but struggle to put anything together that is conclusive.
Leonard James lived in Weymouth but left after the end of WW2.
If anyone can help putting some substance to the anecdotal info we would be very grateful. We plan a roadtrip to Kingston but not really sure if it would shed any light.
Thanks for your time,
Andy

Welcome to Brit-Gen Andy.
We have to be careful not to mention the names of living people on the forums, see Here
FreeBMD has 3 Leonard James Gill born 1900 to 1915 in Devon but this one isinthe registration district which covers Kingston. Unfortunately it is before the end of 1911 when mother's maiden names were recorded. I can't find a marriage for a Frederick Gill to a Beatrice.

Looking at the 1911 census it is their daughter that was named Beatrice and born c1907. You will find the birth record on FreeBMD
Address Kingston near Kingsbridge
Frederick James Gill 26 Horseman on farm born Kingston
Annie Gill 28 wife born Holleton married 4 years. Two children of the marriage.
Beatrice Annie Gill 4 Kingsbridge
Leonard James Gill 3 Kingsbridge
Marriages Jun 1/4 1906
Annie Boolds
Frederick James Gill
Plymouth vol 5b page 542
There is a Beatrice Mary Stephens on the same page on FreeBMD so maybe that is why someone thought Frederick married a Beatrice especially as they named a dau that.
If yo use FreeBMD entering the surname Gill and mother's maiden name Boolds you will find 3 more births but none of them are Lucy. The 2 girls are Alberta and Queenie. Looking for marriages for these children is not as easy as their names suggest because there are at least 3/4 others with the same names. The middle initials may be different.

Hi Andy
this is your Frederick with his parents and siblings in 1901. But as anyone doing their family tree will tell you to be absolutely certain birth and marriage certificates are the way to confirm the information found.

The 1881 census is free to search on numerous sites including familysearch.org, Findmypast, ancestry (the last 2 are pay per view for all other records)
FreeCen and FreeReg are as the name says, free to search but they are works in progress so may not have what you are looking for. They tell you what is available.
