Default George Terry and Rachel Bishop

In researching the Terry line I found George Terry (born Patching 1788) married a Rachel Bishop 28 April 1811 in Clapham. I haven't been able to find any Rachel Bishop born in Sussex around the right time. She appears to have died between 1817 when son Edwin was born and 1821 when I think George remarried. Could use any help on tracing Rachel.
    Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Have you tried the counties next to Sussex?

    at Saint Leonard's Shoreditch London
    Birth Date - 18 Jun 1789

Thanks that is the only one I could find (Shoreditch). But they were married in Clapham Sussex which I believe is more like 60 miles away. There's also a Clapham surrey.
Anyway, that's probably the one but I have no proof as she died prior to a census and there's no father's name on the marriage that I can tell.

Did she marry by banns or by licence? If it was by licence, you may get more details from the marriage allegations & bonds.

Also, have you searched microfilms of the original parish registers of the parishes surrounding the parishes of Clapham (Sussex)?
I use Parish Locator Programme to give a list of parishes within 5 mile radius of the parish of interest and sytematically work my way through the parish registers. Although some of the parishes may be covered by Family search, Free Reg or Online Parish Clerks, rarely are all the parishes covered for all the years, and this is often the reason why baptisms, burials & marriages do not come up in online searches. Some Counties have better coverage than others, and some have no coverage at all.

I'm not sure if this is out of date now, but usually gives a good idea to the coverage of the parishes on Familysearch https://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb....tryEngland.htm

edited to add that most parish registers have been filmed by the LDS and films can be ordered and viewed at their Family History centres.

Also, if you still can't find a baptism in the parish churches, don't forget the non-conformist registers. Although in the 18th century not everyone went to a non-conformist church, as some (such as baptists) didn't baptise children, so you should also look for a baptism as an adult. Often adult baptisms take place just before marriage, or at the same time as baptism of the first child, but I've seen several adult baptisms taking place when a person is well into their 60s! Unfortunately late baptisms do not usually take place in the parish of birth, nor do they usually list the parents.

    Hi les5752
Michelle has given you a wealth of information about parishes etc. I can only add that familysearch.org have an online ordering service now for copies of original documents. Read about it Here

Thanks very much for the advice.
I did find some baptisms for Bishops in Clapham sussex near the right time...for example a Barbara in 1785 born to William and Elizabeth. So a couple of questions...is it likely Rachel's birth is on the microfilm but doesn't come up on a search? Also is there more info on the mirco film than what comes up on an online search? For example if I were to order the film for their marriage would there be more info? "England Marriages, 1538–1973 ," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NV6Y-FYP : accessed 06 Oct 2013), George Terry and Rachel Bishop, 28 Apr 1811.
    Thanks for the help.

You can order the marriage record by email from familysearch.org ( a lot quicker than ordering the film) It may or may not have more information than is available in the online transcription but has to be worth a try.

To order you will need the reference numbers from the marriage records. Go to familysearch.org. At the top RH click on Get Help then research Assistance. On the next page Under Ask A Specialist there is a search box. type in photoduplication service. It will bring up a list of 25, click on the first one then fill in the forms as per instructions.

Again thanks for your help. I got to the form on Familysearch but I guess I need to figure out what they are asking for. On the record I saw batch no, film no, reference ID...but that's not what they are asking for on the form. I think i'll try to go to one of their centers and see if I can get some help.

    Hi
This thread may help you to work out just what is required on the form. Here

But visiting an LDS centre would be a learning experience anyway. Good luck
