Smile Woods Family in Edgefield, Norfolk County

I am at a stand still. I know that my Great-Grandfather (x4) is William Woods and that he was born approximately 1787. He married Elizabeth Merklin who was born around 1791. They have six children, one of which is my ggx3, Thomas Woods.

Thomas has a twin, Benjamin. They were born on 5/3/1816. William's and Elizabeth's first child is Ann and she was born in 1810. I am assuming that they were probably married sometime before that. Somewhere between 1807 and 1810?

I'm hoping to trace my roots back even further but can't seem to find anything out about William Woods' parents or Elizabeth Merklin's.

I would appreciate any leads, ideas, etc. I have looked EVERYWHERE, lol!

Which everywhere have you looked so far moxie 511? Can you tell us where you found birth /baptism dates for Thomas & Benjamin?
How did you discover the names of persons so far?

The closest I've found to a Parents birth is one Elizabeth Mirkley: via Familysearch

    England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

christening:25 January 1789 Themelthorpe, Norfolk, England
    res: Repps-cum-Bastwick, Norfolk, England
Father John House, Mother -Isabella Jeffery

    Wink Thank you!

Thank you so much for your help! Yes, Thomas and Benjamin were born on 5/3/1816. Thomas left England and eventually went to Canada where he married a Maragret (spelling is weird, I know) Donnenworth in 1847 in Galt, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. I don't know christening dates.

I did check the websites you mentioned, but hadn't thought to vary much in Elizabeth's (William's wife; Thomas and Benjamin's mother) birth year or last name.

Thank you so much for your help! I am going to dig further with the information you supplied me.

    Sincerely,
    Jennifer Spedowfski-Martin

You could do a search on this site

    https://freereg.rootsweb.com/

and then if you find your ancestors you can use the information to find them on the scanned images (if they have them) on the Family search site.

I have had great success finding my Norfolk ancestors this way. The Freereg site is a work in progress and is a project to transcribe parish records. One should always check the original records as the transcribers are only human and mistakes are made (I know as I am a transcriber and yes I have made a few mistakes which have now been corrected).

Hi I'm a bit confused where you have got your information from. Freereg (link already provided above) has the ATs for Edgefield transcribed up to 1812. If you look up Ann's baptism there you will find that her mother's maiden name is given as Bullock.
Familysearch has a Benjamin Collins Woods born to William and Elizabeth in 1818. He is not a twin.
    https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3....613&wc=9019838
There is a Thomas baptised to William and Elizabeth in 1816. Again he is not a twin

    https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3....613&wc=9019861

Free reg has a William Woods marrying an Elizabeth Bullock 18 Nov 1803. Both are of the Parish and Francis Woods and Hannah Steward are witnesses.

Free reg has a Benjamin Woods born in 1793 who is a twin, but his brother is Daniel. William Woods and Elizabeth Bullock have the following children William born 2 Oct 1804, John Woods born 22 Jul 1806, Francis Woods born 20 Sep 1808 and Ann born 30 Sep 1810. There is a William baptised 27 Mar 1774 to John and Mary Woods. The twins mentioned before are born to John and Mary Wrench. As the 1841 census gives an approximate dob of 1776 to William Woods. This could be the relevant baptism. However he seems to be close to Francis. Francis parents are Francis Woods and Ann White. They get married in Edgefield 4 Feb 1774. There is a William baptised in Dec 28 1774 to a Francis and Ann Woods (maiden name not given) in Saxthorpe. There is not another Francis Woods getting married around this time in the area that I've found. Edgefield is about 2-3 miles away. This seems to me to be the more likely candidate.

Free reg has an Elizabeth Bullock born 30 Nov 1785 in Edgefield to parents William Bullock and Elizabeth Collins. This would fit with the age given at the 1841 census. There is another Elizabeth Bullock born in the same year to different parents, but because Benjamin is given the name Collins, this is the most likely set of parents.

1841 census details, incase it helps with the search:

    1841 census: 776 book 27 f19 p7
    The Green, Edgefield

    Francis Woods 1816. Broom maker
    Mary 1821
    William 1834
    Sarah 1838
    Ann 1840

If you go back a page there is another Woods family at The Green, Edgefield.

    Francis Woods 1811. Broom maker
    Ann 1806
    Mary 1832
    Susan 1834
    John 1836
    Henery? 9 months.

    - living next door and could well be parents of Francis:

    William Woods 1776. Ag lab.
    Elizabeth 1786

    (everyone is born in Norfolk)

    Forgot to add:

Death of Francis Woods of Edgefield, Norfolk died 28 June 1893.
Probate London 28 July to William Green, High Constable. £10.
It could be either of the above mentioned Francis!

Yes I agree. Both Francis and William had sons called Francis born within a few years of each other. The elder Francis married to Hannah Steward is also living in the village with his wife and family.
