    Default The elusive Veronica

Veronica Regina Smith married Gerard Henri Lonnaux in Bengal, 28 September 1881. Although I have traced Gerard 's mob back to 17th century Europe, I can find nothing on Veronica prior to 1881. She died in Calcutta, 28 Feb 1902

According to family verbal hand-me-downs, she was born in Northumberland, 3 December 1857. I have checked births in that county five years either side of the 1857 date, as well as later checking all of England births, without success.
You'd think that with such specific birth details, the trace would be simple!

I have also checked 1861-1881 England census records, but again, nuffink!

One theory is that she may not have been English-born, and her birth date and place may have been invented! Was this possible, and if so, was it common practice in India?

Hoping you can come up with some answers.

    Jim
