Thanks to an unusual Christian name found on FamilySearch, I've finally knocked down a massive brickwall after two years of searching.
Thanks to a 'lazy' census taker in 1851, the children were entered with initials only.
I couldn't find them in the 1841 census due to transcription errors on Ancestry, and misspelling of Christian names in the original.
Nor could I find birth records matching the initials.
They disappeared before the 1861 census.
Passenger records listed the family as Irish and most of the children's names were covered by an inkblot!
And finally their father's name was John Brown, born somewhere in Staffordshire.
Now, not only do I have another branch in the US but colourful connections to the American Civil War. I have Baptism marriage, burial and census records confirming the connection.

Thank you all. The Christian name found was Emerson. There are still a few initials I haven't solved but at least I know what happened to the family.
