    Default Carlisle/Cumbria novels

has anyone come across any novel based in the 1800's in Carlisle, or Cumbria. I would like to get a picture and a 'feel' for the area where my ancestors lived, and how they would have lived. Thanks

Although it used to be part of Lancashire, Ulverston is now in Cumbria. Copies of Soulby's Ulverston Advertiser are available for the years 1848 to 1862.
A newspaper will certainly give you a flavour of what was happening at the time, who was up to what, where and when. Perhaps fact will end up stranger than fiction....

You could try The Herries Chronicle - 4 novels by Hugh Walpole set in Cumberland.

Have a look at David Ramshaw’s ‘Victor’ on this page (including a review)

...and this might be worth borrowing through your local library to give you some more ideas>

Lastly it might be worth writing to Carlisle Local Studies Library for their ideas>
