Hi
I have recently found out that a relative, John Hayes died in Whitby union workhouse in 1884.
Can anybody help as to why he was in, I believe there was was also an infirmary at this time.
Any help gratefully recieved.

You'll have to ask North Yorkshire Record Office but hardly any Whitby workhouse records have survived.
According to the Workhouse web site, it became St Hilda's Hospital when the NHS was created. There is no entry in the Hospital Records Database. Again, I would advise asking North Yorkshire Record Office.
