I have carried out some more research and now believe that Captain J H CAREW was John Hallowell CAREW, born about 1822 at Waterford, Ireland. He was appointed as an Ensign in the British army in 1840, promoted to Lieutenant in 1843 and to Captain in 1845. There are military records of him serving in Ceylon and China. John was the son of Admiral Sir Benjamin Hallowell CAREW who served on HMS Victory with Admiral Lord Nelson and was one of Nelson's select group of officers who he called his 'Band of Brothers'.

The original family surname was HALLOWELL but in 1828 Sir Benjamin HALLOWELL inherited the Carew estate at Beddington, Surrey, from his cousin and, in accordance with the will, adopted the family surname of CAREW. John was born as John HALLOWELL and later became John Hallowell CAREW after 1828. Although, John was born in Ireland the family were not native to Ireland. John appears to have been born there while his father was on military service.

John received further promotions to Colonel during his military service and retired to West Hackney in London. His death is recorded at West Ham District, Apr-Jun 1899.

Rear Admiral Benjamin HALLOWELL was the Commander in Chief of Cork Station, Ireland, from 1816 to 1818. John HALLOWELL was probably born nearer to 1818 rather than 1822 which tallies with the age he gave in the 1881 census.

Benjamin Hallowell is probably best known as the man who made Admiral Lord Nelson a present of what would become his own coffin, after the Battle of the Nile in August 1798. Hallowell commanded HMS Swiftsure, a 74-gun ship of the line, during the battle. Swiftsure engaged the French flagship L'Orient at close quarters and played a major role in her destruction. Some time later Hallowell sent Nelson a coffin that Hallowell had ordered to be made from a salvaged piece of L'Orient 's mainmast, with an accompanying note:

"Sir, I have taken the liberty of presenting you a coffin made from the main mast of L'Orient, that when you have finished your military career in this world you may be buried in one of your trophies. But that period may be far distant is the earnest wish of your sincere friend, Benjamin Hallowell"

Nelson is said to have been pleased with the gift, keeping it propped against the wall of his cabin for some time, behind the chair in which he sat for dinner, and taking it with him to his next command. After Nelson was killed in 1805 during the Battle of Trafalgar, he was buried in the coffin that Hallowell had given to him.
