Can anyone help me to find a distant relative who is hiding from me somewhere please?
Fanny Heberden, aged eight years, is shown on the 1851 Census - living at home with her parents, Charles and Maria, in West Meon. Sadly they died in 1852 and after that I can't find a trace of Fanny on the 1861 or 1871 census returns. Given that these returns include Institutions etc., I'm at a loss as to where she got to during this time. Her brother Francis died of Epilepsy in the Fareham lunatic asylum in 1860 .
Can anyone help please?
Thanks
Paul

Thanks pejay - I'll have a look. But there's still that 1850 - 1864 gap. It's a mystery.

Thanks again pejay. That is the correct woman. Can anyone tell me whether there is a special tehnique for searching for someone in a workhouse / orphanage on these census returns please? That's the only place that I can think she'd be between 1852 and 1864 - but as pejay confirms - a straight census search isn't finding her.

There is this slight possibility in the District County Prison, Winchester St Faith (RG9/691, folio 37, page 12):
F H Criminal Prisoner U 18 Prostitute Hants Droxford
Correct general area if your Fanny married in Winchester and Droxford is not a million miles away from West Meon.

Thanks Janet. It isn't proof positive I know, but Fanny had had a previous conviction (at Winchester) for theft and the court was told at that time that she was a prostitute. It was always likely that she was in prison when I couldn't find her anywhere else, but I just couldn't track her down. I am confident that this is her. Thank you very much ... how did you find her?

Using Ancestry I searched on initials, F in christian name and H in surname boxes, her date of birth, 1843 plus or minus 2 years, and her place of birth as Hampshire, and she came up top of the list! Institutions often only use initials for their inmates, so it is something to bear in mind for the future. Poor Fanny, she must have found life extremely hard when both her parents died and her brother was in a Lunatic Asylum. Let's hope her life took a turn for the better when she married and had children!

Not just criminal Institutions, Paul, some Workhouses follow the same criteria!
