    Default term "wrappering"

Henry Bampkin of Leicester was convicted in 1840 aged c.21 for steeling an iron weight and sent to Tasmania. Document says he was previously convicted "once for wrapperring[sic] 14 days". Does anyone know what that means? Thanks, Linda

Hard to find a definition Linda, perhaps it means stealing & wrapping the goods on the body.

If anyone wishes to take a look, the word can be viewed on Henry's convict indent. His entry is the second line down.

The criminal register entry for Henry 1st conviction in 1839 simply reads...

Henry Bampkin, N, 17, Leicester Borough Assizes 22nd March, larceny, 14 days

    (Class: HO 27; Piece: 58; Page: 239)

There is an entry in the newspapers for Henry that may help with the mystery word.

    Leicester Journal
    Fri 01 Feb 1839
Henry Bampkin, of Woodgate-street, employed b. Mr. Crolt, trimmer dyer, was charged with stealing six wrapper bags belonging to Mr. Joseph Chamberlain. The prisoner ...

This is just a snippet view. You can find this newspaper entry (and other entries also reporting on Henry) at the British Newspaper Archive. This is a pay site but I believe you can obtain some credits for free when you first sign up.
