IN 1916 when a Marine died his notes recorded his Wife at 'Best town' Chatham. Have been unable to find it online. Can anyone help please?
I have their address in 1911 as Chatham. They married in 1911. Her address still Chatham-a widow.
Due to content of 1911 Versus baptisms on CityArk , I'm trying to place various children before & after 1911.

Wendy the best I can come up with is via Meday Cityark (enter best town in search box)
there is reference to title deeds for redevelopment:
3 best town (Chatham 1864-1957)
15 best town (Chatham 1903-1956)
4 + 22 best town (Chatham 1873-1957)
There is also a Best Street listed under Chatham Borough Council Register of house clearance areas.
If you have a look at the site, there are ref no's for the above and maybe worth an email to Chatham see if this is connected to your query.

Checking the 1911 census, Best Town in Chatham is listed. From the enumerators list, street names either side of Best Town are...
Cage Lane
No's 1 to 24 Best Town (with the Dove Pub at no. 2)
Eldon Street
The Brook
Hive Court
Field Court

Have you tried the census?
For example in 1891, Best Town, Chatham starts here...
The National Archives; RG 12/662 f 131 p 13
If you use Ancestry, you can read the description of the enumeration district.

Can't see Best Town but Eldon Street is here on Google Maps.
If you go to old-maps.co.uk and type in these coordinates, 576204, 167770 you should see Eldon Street. If you switch to an old map - I tried the 1898 Pre-WWII 1:2,500 - you can just about make out Best Town; it's the next street up from Eldon Street and runs parallel to it.

Pippycat, thank you, have just emailed Chatham Council re Electoral rolls ( in hope) & also asked where was Best Town, doesn't come up when googled.
Olliecat, thank you also I tried Best town in address search & got the all too familiar "redefine your search" in my 1916 notes there was the no.12 before Best Town but FMP baulks at that. 1901-1911 had the Family at Fort Rd.
How did you get to Best Town please?Happy Families

On the 1907 1:2500 Ordnance Survey map, Best Town appears as a street, parallel with and to the north-east of Eldon Street, as Olliecat suggests. It stops at a crossroads with Cage Lane and the continuation street is named as Hards Town.

On FMP, I found it by searching as follows. I typed...
*town* in the Street name box. Note the inclusion of the two wildcards.
chatham in the Residential place box
The reason why you could not find it...
On FMP, the street name address comes up as Best Town Chatham. In other words they they have included CHATHAM as part of the street address. If you stick Best Town Chatham in the Street name box, then it works. Sigh!
Edit: No. 12 Best Town has a SMITH family with POCOCK and BRADY in-laws staying. RG14/3900 SN:125

Peter thank you, I'll try Ancestry & see what pops up, I rather think the name changed later as I cannot see it.
Having trouble finding it in 1911 even. overdose from today I think.
I've seen some pretty terrific sites on Chatham during the day.
Aah! Olliecat, thanks again. I didn't think of wildcards!!
'Fonly there was a 1916 census.!
thank you John also.
Having the no. 12 Best town, made it sound like a street. No wonder it didn't come up as an area.
B.G.Members shine again!! Thank you.Happy Families
