Hello from Canada,
I'm completely new at this and hoping to get some help tracing my ancestors. My grandfather, Nelson Banister emigrated to Canada in the early 1900`s. He came from Rye, Sussex as did my grandmother Dorothy Stoneham. My grandfather had a brother named Montague Banister. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank-you.

Hi Ron,
If you have not done so already, you need to get your hands on a copy of Nelson's birth certificate as that will tell you who his parents were and thus make life easier in tracing the line back. Reference:
March quarter 1890, Rye registration district, volume 2b, page 4, Nelson BANISTER
If you are not sure how to order this, just shout and we will explain.

Hello Ron,
Nelson Banister is living with his mother Caroline at 7 Seymour Place, Rye at the time of the 1911 Census. He was a 21 year old unmarried boot repairer. Census Reference: RG14 PN4695 SN94
This census tells us that Caroline was a widow, and had 18 children of whom only 7 were still living.
Do you have access to the British Census images?

Hi Ron,
Copies of birth, marriage and death certificates where the events have been registered in England and Wales can be ordered from the General Register Office (aka the GRO). Click here and follow the links. Each certificate will cost you £9.25 and there is a facility to order from overseas using your credit or debit card.
Reference numbers are not necessarily required but they can help pinpoint an entry. For Nelson, the references for his birth certificate are: March quarter 1890, Rye registration district, volume 2b, page 4. When asked if you have the reference, make sure that the "yes" box is checked.
Please be aware that if you order a certificate via any commercial organisation, the cost will be higher - in some cases considerably! Therefore, it is better to order them straight from the GRO.
To see the sort of information that you are likely to find on a certificate, have a read of this guide and be aware that registration started in England and Wales on 1st July 1837 and so you will not find a birth certificate prior to this date. You would be in the realms of baptisms - which are a different kettle of fish entirely!

The complete census for 1891 for the family is:
Address: 2, Richmond Villas, Rye
Census Reference: RG12 Piece 756 fol. 73 p. 12
Russell H Banister, Head, Married, age 51, Veterinary Surgeon, born Peasmarsh, Sussex
Caroline Banister, Wife, Married, age 45, born Wittersham, Kent
Ernest Banister, son, age 13, Errand Boy, born Rye, Sussex
Amos Banister, son, age 12, Scholar, born Rye, Sussex
Thomas H Banister, son, age 8, Scholar, born Rye, Sussex
Montagu G Banister, son, age 5, Scholar, born Rye, Sussex
Nelson Banister, son, age 1, Scholar, born Rye, Sussex
Just to complete Nelson’s immediate family, they are listed in the 1881 Census as follows:
Address: 7 Seymour [or Seymore] Place, Rye
Census Reference: RG11 Piece 1017 fol. 94 p. 16
Russell H BANNISTER, Head, married, age 42, Veterinary Surgeon, born Peasmarsh, Sussex
Caroline BANNISTER, wife, married, age 34, born Tenterden, Kent
Mary Jane BANNISTER, daughter, age 12, Scholar, born Rye, Sussex

Agnes BANNISTER, daughter, age 9, Scholar, born Rye, Sussex
Ernest BANNISTER, son, age 3, born Rye, Sussex
Amos BANNISTER, son, age 1, born Rye, Sussex
The children in these censuses must be the 7 mentioned as still living in the 1911 Census. It should be possible to find out quite a bit more about the family.
As I mentioned before, do you have access to the images of the British Census e.g. via Ancestry or findmypast?

Can't find Mary Jane's baptism and one would have thought that hers would be there. From the census she was born abt. 1869 and it appears from Family Search that the parents married a few years before this date, in 1866.
