    Default Joshua or George McDonald

    Hi,

I am trying to find out about my wife and my mother-in-laws family, and I am really stuck. We have found a George McDonald that gets married to a Catharine Connell in Liverpool in 1865. He is born abt 1839 in ireland. His father is a Joshua McDonald profession weaver. Joshua is marked as deceased in 1865. Can anyone shed a light on any of this? I have looked in the english censuses, but I can't seem to find my Joshua there. I gather he never left Ireland. How can I find them in Ireland?

    Thanks
    Geir

Hello Geir - welcome to Brit-Gen,

You may find this to be a help in tracing your Irish ancestors.

    Welcome to the forum.

Do you have your George in any of the English census? I cannot seem to find him and Catherine in the Liverpool area
Can you give us the references please?

I'd like to get a 'feel' for George before I go 'a hunting' for Joshua.

    Thanks christanel.

Both threads can run separately as they are about a maternal and paternal line but some of the replies, later in time may 'marry' up.

I cannot find them in 1861 either.

Having looked at the public tree on ancestry I think geirgg has all the census information needed.

There is a letter, open for public viewing, re a request for a yearly property? allowance of 5 pounds and 5 shillings pa.
This was written in 1847 by a third party and states George was "thought" to be of full age so would make his birth date c1836 not c1839 as on the census 1871. But in 1881 George is age 50 so birth c1831.

It also says that both his mother and father were thought to be protestant and his mother was remarried to a Sgt Kane of Dublin Militia Staff. Thought these details may help the search. I have taken the liberty of posting as they are on a public tree on ancestry but if geir wishes a mod can remove my post.

Hi, thanks for showing interest! I have George in the 1871 census from Liverpool. He is married to Catherine, and they have two children (Ann and Joshua). The reference on the side (I guess that is what you are asking for) says RG10/3772. He is also in the 1881 census, and have three children, but now he is a widower.

    Thank you very much

    Hi,

I think the correct birth is 1839, since on the marriage cerificate that I purchased he is 26 in 1865 (I think his age must be wrong in the 1881 census). It is also a catholic wedding, so I am not sure the George you have found is my George.

    Thanks
    Geir
