    Default Edward Thomas Rogersom

    I think this is the right forum for this man as he certainly appears to be both a Wanderer and a pretty darned good Actor.

    On his marriage to Maria Griffiths on December 2, 1849 his occupation is indicated as a Tragedian which I believe is connected to the theatre. He indicates that he is of full age and that his father was John Lindo Rogerson a Gentleman

    Working backwards, I found a baptism for an Edward Rogerson on December 31, 1834. His father was John Lido Rogerson amd his mother was Eliza. This baptism register indicates his date of birth as October 11, 1829. So he was 20 when he married which satifies that part.

    On the same date, 2 of his siblings were baptised - John born April 4, 1827 and Albert Lindo born November 27 [?] 1834. The father's occupation was a Grocer amd the family lived at #2 Richmond Cottages

    His father married Eliza Ingledew on May 13, 1826 in Bethnal Green St. John. When he married, he was a Widower and she was a Spinster.

    The 1st wife for his father was Eliza Kienlen and they married on June 21, 1818 in St. Botolph without, Aldgate. I have found 2 baptiems for children of this union - John Christopher Rogerson, born January 7, 1821 and Charles John Christopher Rogerson, no birth date stated.
    The 1st baptism was on January 13, 1821 and the 2nd was on January 15, 1822. Both were in Ho1born. The one in 1821 was in St. Andrew, Holborn and the latter was in Holborn St. Sepulchre. His occupation in 1821 was a Clerk to a Horse Dealer and they lived at Kings Mews. They were at the same address in 1822.

    Some time between 1822 and 1826 his 1st wife died - but I cannot find her death

    Can someone assist with finding these folks in 1841?

    I have Edward Thomas with Maria in 1851. He is on the census as employed in Theatrical. They have a 6month old son. They lived in Shoreditch

    I have the family in 1861 now with 4 more children. They now live in Hull Holy Trinity, Yorkshire, and he is now a Photographer

    Any assistance on this group for 1841 would be appreciated

    Another child for you...

    Isabella Rogerson baptised on 17 Dec 1837 at Hoxton St John. Born 10 (16?) Jun 1836. Parents John Lindo and Eliza. Abode Hoxton Town. Occupation clerk.

    I can see this family in the 1841 census. Would you like just the census ref or a transcription as well?

    If I'm not asking too much - both would be great

    Have you considered this burial...

    Burial of Eliza Rogerson on 7 Nov 1824 at Hackney St John. Abode St.Pancras. Age 27.

    Do you know when Eliza Kienlen was born; if it was abt. 1797 then the above could be her.

    All I have on this Eliza Kielen is what I gleaned from a tree on A. which gives a birth about 1797. With her marriage in 1818 1n Aldgate and the 2 baptisms in Holborn, is the location of her burial and abode prior to death, a reasonable set of circumstances to link up?

    Going back to my 1st post - what exactly would a Tragedian be? - my thought was an extra in tragedies that were staged in Lomdon. The census in 1851 doesn't shed any light on his role in the theatre so again I'm thinking he was an extra or understudy - but googling his name and the years he may have been involved with the theatre hasn't produced any result at all.

    Maybe, as an Actor, he wasn't so 'hot' and with several kids he scarpered to Yorkshire and set up as a Photographer.

    Colin,
    A tragedian or tragedienne is an actor or actress who specialises in tragic roles or a writer of tragedy.

    One can only speculate but here are a few thoughts on this. First of all, St Pancras is not far from Kings Mews, Holborn which is the address recorded in 1823 on the baptism of John and Eliza's child John Stephen ROGERSON. It's about a mile away or 15 minutes walk, so it's possible that they moved to the St Pancras area between 1823 and 1824.

    I was wondering why Eliza was buried at Hackney St John if her abode was St Pancras as it is about 5 miles from St Pancras to St John at Hackney.

    Google Map for you showing the approximate distances.
    A = St Pancras area
    B = Kings Mews, Holborn
    C = St John's, Clapton Square, Hackney

    Since this was puzzling me, I looked into Eliza's background. Possibly her baptism...

    Eliza KINLEN baptised on 20 Apr 1800 at St John at Hackney, dau of Christian Phillip and Sarah KINLEN. Born 17 Nov 1797.
    Note: Sister Charlotte born on 25 March 1800 was baptised on the same date.

    Assuming I have the correct baptism and parents for Eliza and checking to see where they were buried...

    Burial of Christian Philip Kienlen on 11 Jun 1809 at St John at Hackney. Age 44.
    Est birth date: 1765

    Burial of Sarah Kienlen on 18 Aug 1817 at St John at Hackney. Abode Church St. Age 53.
    Est birth date: 1764

    Thus it would make sense for their daughter Eliza to be buried at St John at Hackney.

    P.S.

    Just to mention that Sarah Kienlen left a will which was proved on 23 August 1817. Her daughter (and Eliza'a sister) Sophia Kienlen also left a will which was proved on 08 February 1820. See this TNA page here (click this link twice if the correct details don't appear.)

    On a completely different note: I assume that you've come across the indictment of Richard MITFORD at the Old Bailey in 1822 with respect to a bill of exchange and the intent to defraud John Lindo ROGERSON.
