    An Update for those who were following this - and helping.

    I now have John Howick's birth certificate and it confirm he was born in Yapton in Sussex on 8th June 1853. His father was William Howick "A labourer" and his mother was Sally Howick formerly Eames. She registered the birth - making her mark.

    I've been back to my Ancestry tree on line and deleted all the census references and all the children of William except John (of whom I am sure) and his younger brother George whose middle name was Eames and, therefore, seems convincingly right.

    So I now have an almost blank sheet of paper to start again and, hopefully, not get my knickers in a twist this time!

    The first thing that occurs is that the 1845 marriage in Appledram between William Howick and Sarah Howick is wrong but I'm going to lie down in a darkened room for a while before I go any further ..............
