I have just found a copy of the Berwick on Tweed Directory for 1806.
Under Butchers, I have found an Edward Keen, Butcher, who I believe to be my 5x gt grandfather.
He had a stall in the Piazzas.
There is also a Joseph sen & Joseph jnr, both butchers with a stall in the Shambles.
It seems likely that they are related to Edward, but as yet I do not know how.
I have deaths for the two Josephs:
16th Oct 1814 Age 73 (b c1741)
25 April 1830 Age 55. (b c1775)
Going by these dates, it could be that Edward was brother to either one of the Josephs.
I have no dates for Edward. All I know is that my 4x gt grandfather George bap 1787, was son of Edward (found on the IGI)
Also, where was the Piazza & Shambles??
Any help would be great.

John Fuller's The history of Berwick upon Tweed (1799) is online via Google Books.
From p.177 I gather that the piazza was a sort of indoor market on the upper floor of the Town Hall.
The shambles are mentioned several times, but you have to search for fhambles to find them, because the printers have used a long 's' that looks like an 'f'.
On p.429 it says 'There are shambles situated on the outside of the market place facing Church Street.'

Crikey! That book is amazing! Thank you. As it was written c1799, it is really 'of the time!'
The family lived in Church street, which was also the heart of the Butchery businesses.
Just need to find a link between Joseph & Edward.

Hi Sue,
I think this is a possible link between Edward and Joseph senior, both baptisms at Wooler;
Joseph KEEN 09 Nov 1741, father Andrew KEEN
Edward KEEN 17 April 1752, parents Andrew KEEN and Jane.

It's looking more than a possibility... Edward named his first child Andrew;
Edward KEEN m Sarah WILSON 03 Feb 1782 Berwick on Tweed
Andrew KEEN bap 16 Feb 1783 Berwick on Tweed

Right! I can see now that these records are on the IGI and do look very good!
I think I had seen them before, but had discounted them due to the distance between Wooler & Berwick, but I have now checked and they are only 16 miles apart.
