Wapping Workhouse - 1871

I have a chap who was described in the 1871 census as a Widower. This I think is possibly not true, as while I can't find his wife in 1871 census, she does show up in the 1881 census with her married son and his family.

Were there 'requirements' for admission to this particular workhouse?

Strictly, he should have been resident within the Poplar poor-law union for at least one year, and is likely to have been ill, destitute, or incapable of work for some reason. His marital status would not normally have had a bearing on his admission.

Please note that the Wapping workhouse, though previously run by the Stepney Union, was at this date being operated as a branch workhouse of the Poplar Union.
