    Default Alice Turner Day

Can anyone get me on track in getting more info on this person or perhaps an insight into how officially registering births/marriages etc might have been regarded. I have found Alice on 2 possibly 3 census's. 1881 she was co-habiting in a Hay Rick in Milston Wiltshire with a James Day. Her birth place is down as Shipton Hants and from her age give about 1862. I assume Shipton is Shipton Bellinger as I cant find any other. They also have a 4month daughter. In 1891 they have progressed to living in a Gypsy tent on Whtisbuy Down and have many children. Again Alice has given place of Birth as Shipton. She has however given her name as DAY. In a 1911 census she is on her own with a few children at an address in Salisbury (if its the same person). James must still be alive as he is given as next of kin for his son Harry when Harry enlisted in 1916.
Anyway I can find no official record of Birth for Alice or marriage to James. Also Harry gave his birthplace as Woodgreen Hants, not too far from Whitsbury and near Godshill , where a lot of Romany's have stayed I believe over the years. I got hold of a Birth cert for the only Harry born at that time in that location , When I received it Father James Day Mother Alice, but ....... with a surname of Whitlock. So there we are , I dont know what to do next any pointers very much appreciated kind regard Adrian

Have you found son Harry in the 1901 census?

Edit: I see you have a thread on Harry Day here.

Still trying to gather information on ths family and I see on Family Search there are these two baptisms...

    name: Walter Day
    baptism/christening date: 30 Jul 1886
baptism/christening place: St. Martin, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England
    father's name: James Day
    mother's name: Alice

    name: Alfred James Day
    baptism/christening date: 10 Dec 1886
baptism/christening place: St. Martin, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England
    father's name: James Day
    mother's name: Alice

Perhaps these are their birth registrations....

    Births Mar 1885 Devizes 5a 117
    DAY Alfred James

    Births Sep 1886 Alderbury 5a 186
    Day Walter

Possibly a birth registration for Elizabeth (since they were in the Fordingbridge registration district in the 1891 census)...

    Births Jun 1890 Fordingbridge 2b 653
    DAY Elizabeth Ann

Another possible baptism and birth for one of the children...

    name: Lily Day
    gender: Female
    baptism/christening date: 14 Jun 1892
    baptism/christening place: Rockbourne, Hamsphire, England
    father's name: James Day
    mother's name: Alice

    Births Sep 1892
Day Lily Louisa Fordingbridge 2b 676

So it does looks like this could be the correct Alice Day in the 1911 census.

    Thanks Olliecat
I can see I had been a bit lazy when starting the thread and I will endeavour to improve my structure and content in future posts.
After seeing you 3 replies , i got myself a clean sheet of paper and mapped out what i have this family and I have now found a death record for Walter in 1909 so that also fits with the statement about the numbers of living children in the 1911. BTW if I stand on my roof I can see Gas Lane.
I think I am to get hold of a couple of birth certs probably William then Elizabeth and see what the mothers maiden name is.
Still a mystery, no marriage record or birth for Alice

Also you are quite correct about Harry in another thread. We had always assumed he was a Yorkshireman, even my father told me so! But Harry's military number was on his marriage cert and from that I was really lucky to get his military records. I am still transcribing them and will post back a script to each site that has helped me. These records have his place of Birth (Woodgreen) Godshill wood is there. Also his mother and father are given as Next of Kin father in 1916 (enlistment) and mother in 1920(regular Army) has his enlistment number crossed out and replaced with his regular army number. what a find!
    many thanks again Adrian

these are all the children of Alice Turner and James Day as the youngest Charlie (actually spelt Charley is my great grandad )! What i have found after researching my family tree is that Alice signed 2 or 3 birth certificates with the name ayres and eyres and whitlock and there is a record of an Alice Ayres daughter of George Ayres and Susanna Ayres formerly Angell????
