Hamilton/Lawson and Aitkenhead/Harvie - Rutherglen Lanarkshire
Hello All! I just discovered this site by accident when searching for info on Rutherglen for a Christmas gift to my mom. After poking around in the site I find it's a gift for myself! Thank you so much for all the excellent info and leads for searching. Loved the bit about 'leaves' being more important than branches on the family tree. How true as I've found myself in terrible mess when adding names without facts and research to prove the connections.
Mom's father was George Hamilton (Nov 1888 - Rutherglen) son of Arthur Hamilton and Jane (Jeanie) Lawson. Arthur and Jane also had Jeanie (Jane?) and John (Jock to family). Both sons emigrated to Canada prior to WWI, which they both enlisted for in Canada - and survived, thankfully. Following Arthur's death, their mother followed, arriving Nov 1919 at Halifax NS, bound to join her son in Toronto. She died in Victoria, BC on 30 Dec 1948. My mom recalls her living with them in Victoria.
My grandparents divorced when my mom was a little girl. She lost touch with her Hamilton relatives. There's an amazing number of George and John Hamiltons from Scotland born about the same time as my relatives making it difficult to locate accurate information or contact family on this side of the poind.
If there are any family members on this forum, it would be great to make contact and share what information we each have gathered.
Once again, thanks for this great site!

Dear Sue
Welcome!!!
In my several years as a member of this site, many potential 'brick walls' have not materialized. I hope you have the same success.

Hi Susan Too,
Thank you for the welcoming words. I tell you these relo's would be easier to 'locate' if there wasn't so much inter-breeding and the perennial repeat of first names!!

Hello, Sue in Langley--
Now the holidays are passed, maybe you'll have a chance to look down the list of sub-forums on Brit-Gen, and will find the right place to post your most puzzling question. Just a hint--it helps to put some key points in the title, then in the message to let members know what you've already found out (and where you found it), and what that most nagging question is.
Members here are very kind, very keen, and extremely helpful. They volunteer all kinds of help for us who are miles (sorry, kilometers) away.
Oh, and feel free to ask the "dumb questions". (There will be lots of other people out there who will also want to know the answer.) Brit-Gen members willingly help people at all levels of expertise.
Good luck with your Hamilton hunting, and all the other ancestors I'm sure you'll turn up....
Fellow Canadian,
