    Default William Day's brother-in-law

I sent off for the death certificate for the following registration:

    Deaths Sep 1935
    Day William 73 W.Ham 4a 59

Who I believe was the William Day that was married to my grandad's aunt Rose (she passed away in 1931), but upon receiving the certificate today, I noticed that the informant was listed as his brother-in-law.

I'm not entirely sure of the surname although I think it might be "Fage"?

My other confusion is that as far as I'm aware, William Day was an only child from the census returns I have found for him from 1871 onwards.

    1871:
    Joseph Day 37 Swavensey, Cambridgeshire
Mary A Day 39 Boxworth, Cambridgeshire
    William Day 7 Swavensey, Cambridgeshire

    Class: RG10; Piece: 1630; Folio: 52; Page: 23

    1881:
    Joseph Day 47 Cambridgeshire, England
    William Day 17 Cambridgeshire, England

    Class: RG11; Piece: 1716; Folio: 64; Page: 40

He was married in 1887 and appears with Rose from 1891 onwards.

Joseph is at the following places in the following censuses:

    1861:
    Joseph Day 26 Swavesey, Cambridgeshire
    Mary A Day 29

    Class: RG9; Piece: 978; Folio: 41; Page: 16

    Possibly but unlikely, 1891:
    Joseph Day 57 Barningham, Suffolk
Mary A Day 54 Market Weston
    Albert Day 17 Stratford, Essex

    Class: RG12; Piece: 1344; Folio 57; Page 25

    1901:
    Joseph Day 67 Cambridgeshire
    Mary Ann Day 69

    Class: RG13; Piece: 1579; Folio: 87; Page: 28

Ah... but could this be Rose's brother - or even her sister's husband (if she had a sister)?

It could have been but I believe I have tracked down all of Rose's siblings who were:

    Henry Robert David Crouch, 1864 - 1900
    Robert Peter Crouch, 1871 - 1928
Jane Mary Ann Crouch, 1875 - 1962 (married Alfred Ernest Challis in 1897)
    Alfred Matthew Crouch, 1878 - 1887
    Herbert Douglas Crouch, 1883 - 1938
Eleanor Olive Crouch, 1886 - 1952 (married Arnold James Clapperton in 1908)

    Drat!

Have you checked the earlier censuses to see if you can find this J "Fage" at all?

Also, I was wondering if it could be "Jago" - the loops on the "J" fading out to make it look like an "F" but it is difficult to see. Any chance of posting a slightly larger image?

There is a James FAGE in the 1911 census living at 75 Hubert Road East Ham. Coincidence?
Do you want the details? (Back in a mo.)

A James Fage married in the West Ham district in Q3 1885. The only other person listed by FreeBMD with the same vol./page no. is Eliza Day. Perhaps worth investigating this couple further (especially given that 1911 census finding by olliecat).

    Census details for you.

FAGE, James, head, 48, under foreman gas works, Northnal Parish Bedfordshire
FAGE, Eliza, wife, 48, at home, West Ham Parish Essex
    RG14/9547 SN388

They were married 25 years with no children.

Note: from the BMD indexes, James FAGE may have died in 1947, age 84. Essex South Western Registration district. If it is the same chap he would have still been alive and able to register the death of William DAY in 1935.

In the 1901 census, Eliza FAGE states she was born in Plaistow. Presuming that DAY was her maiden name and looking in the 1881 census, I can find one Eliza DAY born abt 1863 in Plaistow. She is with her mother Hannah and siblings. One of her siblings is a William DAY born abt in 1862 in Plaistow.

RG11/1724, f104, p20 (crown copyright, care of the TNA)

I'm sure you are going to want to dunk me in a pond or something but are you sure you have the correct death certificate for your William DAY?

(Note: there were plenty of other Eliza DAY's born in Essex in the census but this was the only one I could see that had born in Plaistow.)

I think after reading post 9 that I may have the wrong death certificate for William Day, as I couldn't link anyone with a similar surname to 'Fage'.

My William Day was listed as the informant on the death certificate of Rose who passed away on the 11th July 1931 in West Ham's district.

The only problem is that all of the other William Days whose death registrations were in West Ham after 1931 seem to have middle names other than the one I ordered.

I'm at a loss now to work out how to track down his death registration.
