Searching for Lewis Kershaw, I have his marriage, I have him in 1851 living with his in laws and in 1861 and 71 with wife Sarah and children. He was born Oldham Lancashire in 1828, like most Lancastrians he works in the cotton industry. I can find no birth for him and I can't find him in 1841 when hopefully he'd be with his parents. The Lancashire PR's are brilliant but there is no trace of a Lewis Kershaw. I have tried removing christian name, removing date of birth, removing place of birth but not a thing. IGI threw up two unnamed male Kershaws born the right year, baptised Manchester cathedral one in August one in September - either could possibly be Lewis but how to find out? Advice needed please?

FamilySearch, in its non-conformist record indexes, has a baptism on 30 August 1827 of Lewis, son of James & Sally Kershaw.
The TNA reference given is RG 4/979. Cross-checking on the BMD Registers website shows that this is a 'Register of Baptisms at Greenacres Independent Chapel in Oldham, Lancashire'. You should (for a fee) be able to see a scanned image of the register entry via BMD Registers.
Does this tie in with what it says on Lewis's marriage certificate about his father?

on the 1841 Census (HO107/546/7/3 Page 1) for Primrose Hill, Oldham Cum Prestwich, Oldham Above Town there is a LEWISA KERSHAW born about 1828 living with:
James b. abt. 1806 occ: Blacksmith
Sally b. abt. 1806
Hugh b. abt. 1826 occ: Piecer
Richard b. abt. 1834 occ: Piecer
Anna b. abt. 1836
Joseph b. abt. 1840
Betty SMITH b. abt. 1823 occ: Weaver
all born in County.
Lewisa is enumerated as "female" BUT that could be down to the name beng mis-heard.
Do the other names mean anything to you?

I forgot to add that living next door to the family, in 1841, (same reference) there is:
Mary KERSHAW, aged 55 occ: Ind.
Sarah KERSHAW aged 25 occ: Weaver
Granville KERSHAW aged 25 occ: Book Keeper
James KERSHAW aged 11 months.
all born in County.
there is also a marriage on FreeBMD:
Dec qtr 1839
KERSHAW Granville Manchester 20 609
on same page:
SLATER Sarah Manchester 20 609
or
THOMAS Sarah Greaves Manchester 20 609

according to Lancs BMD:
Granville KERSHAW married Sarah G. THOMAS at St. Mary's, Prestwich
a copy of the marriage certificate should prove whether Granville and James were brothers and Mary possibly their mother.
