    Default Savidge/Savage's in England

    Hello,

I posted earlier that I am researching my family back to England. Here is as much information as I have. If anyone can connect the dots for me, I would be very, very grateful! I will list from the person I believe is my ancestor that came from England down to my earliest known Ancestor in the U.S. Thomas Walter Savidge is the earliest ancestor that I have documentation about. The others I have traced from people in the U.S. on Ancestry.com so I want to try and verify this information. Hopefully, someone is trying to trace their Savidge ancestors forward to the U.S.!

    Default RE: Savidge/Savage's in England

    Hello,

I wanted to see if anyone in Cheshire could help me find information on an ancestor of mine. I believe that John (Savage) Savidge was born in 1627 in Beeston, Cheshire. He married Elizabeth Dubbin. At some point, they immigrated to the U.S for he died in 1684 in Connecticut. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

    Susanna Savidge Patterson

    Also,

If anyone could give me some idea of the difference between the spelling Savage and Savidge, that would be great. Is it a geographical difference? I always wondered where the Savidge spelling came from which is my family name.

Pre WW1, spelling of names was a pretty fuzzy thing. You gave your name to the clerk or Minister, he wrote down what he heard. Very often, the Ministers weren't locals and regional accents could be strong, so what they said was often not what was heard.
For example, I have 6 different spellings for one of my families - 2 of them were used in the same entry, and they were all used in the same county! (they were Baldie (or y), Bawdy (or ie), Baude and Bauldwe - the latter being the oldest)

I doubt whether there's any difference between your two spellings - it looks as though it might have changed when the Cheshire accent of John Savage met American registration....

    try
    https://cgi.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/
    database
    baptisms marriages burials
    baptism
    savage
page 3 Elizabeth Savage Iin the month of May 1625 Neston father Thomas I can't find John Savage baptism - my family Oakes are from Neston and I have visted a couple of times ...a small village and even smaller in 1620's ....so I would suggest that your Johns father may have been Thomas Savage ...
Elizabeth Dubbin is b 1831 according to Find a Grave records
    birth: 1631
    death: 1696
burial: Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut, United States of America
(and they have a photograph of the grave)
    Photograph Included Y
    Affiliate Record Identifier 98223104
    Cemetery Riverside Cemetery

so I would suggest in Neston 1620's the spelling in Parish Records IT IS Savage .....
    added
there are NO Parish Records in Cheshire that early for DUBBIN ....so it looks like they never married in Cheshire

according to a family tree I have found
Elizabeth Dubbin - born 1631 Hartford - Hartford CT
Married John Savage 10th february 1652
    children
    Elizabeth 1655
    Sarah 1657
    Mary 1658
Abigail 1666 that is a huge gap in between births
    William 1668
    Nathaniel 1671
    Rachel 1673
    Hannah 1675
this tree has John Savage born 1630 .....do you know of a Linda Guilmart ??
another tree has Elizabeth ( D'Aubin) Dubbin b 1631 ...THAT would make a lot of sense to me ...French origin Anglicised ...so - I woul have a look at D'Aubin in Hartford ,Connetticut in late 1500's to early 1600's

quite a few Parker in Great Hallingbury 1550-1625 - but NO Savage family -
Neston had a huge Quarry in 1600's I wonder if John who married Katherine Parker was a Quarryman ?? and moved around the country ??
maybe he went to USA to work on a quarry ??
