This chap in Oldham cannot be the John LANGAN mentioned in post #1. The one we are looking for married Margaret COSGROVE in 1880 in Liverpool at Our Lady & St. Nicholas & St. Anne (from Lancashirebmd). In 1891 and 1901 census he states his birthplace as Birkenhead. I cannot find them in 1881 census.
The John Thomas LANGAN from Oldham is still single in 1881, still in Oldham, a boarder in Wheeler household.
I think, Lango, you have to get the marriage certificate of John and Margaret to find out who his father was.

Lango, you've had a lot of helpful and enthusiastic replies here.

But I do wonder if the Oldham family is the correct one? Later censuses show John LANGAN born in Birkenhead, which is a heck of a way from Oldham.

First, you need the marriage of John and Margaret, to check the name of John's father.

    From Liverpool parish registers ...

19 July 1880, St Nicholas, Liverpool
John Langan 21 Bachelor Labourer Bridgewater Street. Father - Thomas Langan, Labourer
Margaret Cosgrove 21 Spinster Bridgewater Street. Father - Thomas Cosgrove, Labourer
    After banns
Witnesses - Joseph Farrell, Catherine Thompson
    (all parties made their mark)

Here is a possible 1861 census:

    1861 census
    RG9/2642 folio 104 page 42
    6 Eldon Place, Birkenhead
Thomas Langen Head Mar 32 D(oc)k Lab(oure)r born Ireland
Mary Langen Wife Mar 30 born Ireland
Mary Langen Daur Unm 10 Scholar born Cheshire Birkenhead
Thomas Langen Son 8 Scholar born Cheshire Birkenhead
John Langen Son 2 born Cheshire Birkenhead

(census record held by TNA, Crown copyright)

this John LANGAN gives an estimated date of birth of 1861 but I cannot find a suitable Cheshire birth on either Cheshire BMDs or FreeBMDs, so something is amiss.
