My father (born 1903)told me he started work as a cleaner at Salisbury.
He later transferred to Faversham as (cleaner passed fireman). This
would have been abou 1930-32 and the company was either Southern
Railway or South Eastern & Chatham. He was born in Wilton and had
at least one uncle employed by the railway and his grandfather who
was from North Bradley and listed as a railway packer in the 1851
census. My father died in 1959 so I can't ask him. Can anyone else offer
(polite) suggestions as to where I might look for hard facts about his
(and my other relatives) railway careers
