I have been searching my info to find sources for my ancestors and this is what I found to date.
On the 1851 Census

employing 23 labourers

On the LDS site I found Edward Hilder( DOB 1814,DOD 1894) married to Mary Ridley (DOB 1819, DOD 1887). They were married @1839 at Northgate England but the children are Edward 1840-1842
Ridley 1847, Charlotte 1840, then Clara 1853,Alice 1857. Edward's (DOB 1814) parents were listed as Richard Hilder and Ann Challis and his wife Mary Ridley.
Any help would be appreciated!

Have you come across the discussion on Ancestry's message boards called 'The Hilder family of Tasmania'? One of the contributors to the thread is descended from Richard Hilder and Ann Challis from Cockfield, and has evidently done much research on the family.

Thought I'd have a look, see if there were any Richard Hilder's in Cockfiled.

HILDER, Ann 60
HILDER, Richard 35
NORMAN, Elizebeth 65
ALDERTON, Eliza 20
SANSAM, Mary 70
All born Suffolk.
Note: It looks like Edward Hilder, Mary and their 1 month old child Mary are in Old Hall Green, Cockfield in 1841.

Death announcement from the Ipswich Journal, 29 April 1843:
'22nd inst., aged 66, Ann, wife of Mr. Richard Hilder, farmer, of Cockfield.'
And another from the Bury and Norwich Post, and Suffolk Herald, 1 Jan. 1851:
'On the 30th inst., at Cockfield Church House, near this town, Mr. Richard Hilder, late of Old Hall Green Farm, in the 81st year of his age, leaving four sons and two daughters to lament their loss.' [definitely says 'inst.', i.e. this month, but must mean December]Last edited by Coromandel; 02-04-2011 at 5:15 PM. Reason: To move a bit to a later post where it fits better

Guess the announcements tie in with these.
Deaths Jun 1843 Cosford 12 223
HILDER Ann
Deaths Mar 1851 Cosford 12 255
HILDER Richard
I couldn't see a PCC will for Richard. Perhaps one went through the lower courts.

From Probate records in the court of the Archdeacon of Sudbury 1801-1858 (edited by Mary Rix et al.; published 2002, snippets visible on Google Books):
HILDER, Richard, farmer, Cockfield, 1827, R2/105/515, Wl/28l/69
[HILDER,] Richard, farmer, Cockfield, 1851, R2/1 13/70, Wl/305/19
I can't see the bit that explains the abbreviations, but am hoping that 'W' means will.
(Pre-1858 probate records for the Court of the Archdeaon of Sudbury are held at the Bury St Edmunds branch of the Suffolk Record Office.)Last edited by Coromandel; 02-04-2011 at 6:17 PM. Reason: To add bit about record office

More death announcements, maybe for the previous generation:
The Bury & Norwich Post, Wednesday 1 Nov 1826
'On the same day [i.e. 'On Sunday last'], in her 88th year, after a long and painful affliction, Catherine, the wife of Mr. Richard Hilder, sen. of Cockfield Cottage.'
Bury & Norwich Post, Wednesday 7 Feb 1827
'On Thursday last, in his 85th year, Richard Hilder, Gent. of Cockfield Cottage, whose mild and gentle manners had gained him the highest respect of his relatives and friends.'
