Hi guys, Just out of interest, what did a leather dresser do as an occupation? Once of my ancestors had this on various certs. Thank you

I believe they applied lubricant to the hide after tanning as the final stage before the leather was made into something!!

A dresser (could be applied to more than one craft) is someone who finishes, smooths or treats something.
So a leather dresser might smooth the surface of leather as part of the process of making it into something useful.

Leather Dresser was a general term covering various distinct occupations including
- Oiler
- Damper
- Stainer
- Printer
- Whitener
If you find something more specific, eg from BMD and census returns, give us a shout.

On the other hand, "Leather dresser" could be something completely different!!!!!
