    Smile Kaufmans or kauffmans

    Hi All,
I am looking for ancestors of Lewis and Annie Kauffman (or Kaufman) who are my great grandparents. They lived at 75 Brushfield Street, Spitafields, London, England in 1908. I am not sure where there roots were in Europe. They had sons Aaron, Charlie, Ruben and David.

    Thanks!

Hello David and welcome to Brit-Gen!

Have you tried the 1911 census? You can search it on the official website, https://www.
1911census.co.uk/ or on the Findmypast site. Searches in the indexes are free; to see images of the forms filled in by householders and census enumerators you'll need to buy some credit or get a subscription.

Hi David, I can't see them at that address in the census. Do you have any more information, such as birth dates.

I imagine your Lewis is Q3 1908 Lewis KAUFMAN, Whitechapel and hence the address). Try using https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

for more possibilities on his whereabouts and poss. those of children. Also, had a quick look for Reuben (NB: this is the usual spelling) and found several. I guess you will know who they are. If you use a wildcard search such as kauf* quite a lot of poss. variations are take care of!

It is possible they entered the country with other family members - if they did that would be a great help

There are various Louis / Lewis KAUFMAN in 1901 census which may (just may) be an avenue worth exploring as this name could be passed down in the family or be repeated among close relatives

There is a Lewis KAUFFMAN age 3 (right age) in St. George in the East and one also age 3 in Mile End Old Town - have you discounted them? That's the 1911 census by the way!

BTW - I may be getting confused with WHO the person is that has a particular record (and associated address) for London in 1908: is it Lewis or one of the children etc. Please provide some more information

There's a marriage of a Louis KAUFMAN in 1907 at Mile End Old Town. An Annie CYPRES is listed amongst others. However, this is speculative and I will wait for your input David.

That would fit with some KAUFMAN birth registrations in the Whitechapel and Mile End districts with mother's maiden name variously given as CYPRUS, CEPRES and COPRES. (I won't give the names and dates in case any of these are still alive, but you can check for yourself on FreeBMD, David).
