I suggest you google "major james ketchen" (and then "james ketchen" india and just "ketchen" india for example) for a start as it brings up relevant links and then take it from there. Perhaps when you have done that you can post something more specific about what you would like to know about him and/or his family?

I see you have related threads on the KETCHEN name

I'm not sure I fully understand these listings, or whether the dates mean any of these is your man, but from the Indian Army & Civil Service List 1861:-

    p 24. Graduation List.
    Lieutenant-Generals, 1857: 1806 Ketchen, J.; Madras Artillery; 13 Oct.

    p 263. Army List.
    Lieutenant-Generals: 1806 Ketchen, J.; Art.; 13 Oct. 57

    p 268. Madras Field Officers.
    Artillery. Colonels: Ketchen, J.; 26 Mar. 44

p 274. Madras. Regiment of Artillery.
    J. Ketchen; Appt 1857; Regimental Rank 27 Aug. 58; Horse Artillery Bangalore

p 444. Bombay. List of Unposted Officers.
    Infantry. J. Ketchen -- on furl. 27 July 1859

    Hello

Reference the above, I decided 1806 was the year of birth, 'furlough' temporary leave of abscence from post
    google....

The pages relate to books issued and likely to be found on the ''books' link

The dates are most likely the date of promotion

London gazette will most probably carry these london-gazette.co.uk
