Jane - there is a report in the Liverpool Mercury Thurs Dec 23 , 1875 which states:
"Jane Dickson aged 30 a domestic hung herself at Rutland Villa, near Loanhead, on Sunday. She gaeve birth on the 4th instant to an illegitimate child which died soon after, and she had been in a desponding state"
Perhaps a search on Rutland Villa might give a clue?

On the face of it it would seem possible that the role of John CONNOR (policeman, poss. based at Loanhead) was that he was called to the scene when Jane Dickson was found hanged at Rutland Villa and he registered not only her death but also the birth / death of her son George. While I did find an article on Jane's death, which showed she worked at Rutland Villa as a domestic, there may be more local coverage of her death and inquest - perhaps the following might be a useful place to start....

I'm sorry that you have such a sad story to be researching. Loanhead does have a library which may be helpful and can be found following the link Bertie gave above.

The National Library of Scotland have the 1875 Post Office directory for Edinburgh online. Loanhead is on p 529 and has a Robert Barton living at Pentland Villa.
Although probably of little relevance to your family, Robert Barton's will is available to download for £5 from Scotlands people
