It's interesting once you start looking at what you consider to be unusual names, since I posted the query I have found hundreds if not more. I think it was most often used for males. I have seen some Sydney Melbournes also.

Hi
I have an Edwin Melbourne Rundle in my tree, after following his Fathers line, I discovered that one of Edwins uncles emigrated to Melbourne the year he was born....

It's interesting that it is not just todays children that are given unusual names but that it was also happening years ago. Best of luck to genealogists of the future.

I would have thought Melbourne would be a boy's name, probably called after Lord Melbourne who was Home Secretary in Victoria's early days. Rather a nice name.
