Default 1911 search for Cook at Ilkeston Derbyshire

Sorry it would not let me say please on the end of the title !
I have got a death for my G. Granddad James Cook in 1913 at Ilkeston which was registered at Basford (As you had to)

He changed his name in later life to his mothers from Smith
His wife was registered as Cook on her death in 1891

Unfortunately I do not have the 1911 census to check where he is. I cannot find him on the 1901 census for either Smith or Cook
He was born in 1834 ish

    Thanks Esh

The rules of this site don't permit 1911 census lookups from Findmypast.

However the index is free, can you see anyone in the index who looks likely?

Esh, do you have any more information on James Cook? Occupation for example. Or when he changed his name. Do you have him in any earlier census years? What was the name of his wife?

Did he re-marry? I came across this ...

    Marriages Sep 1895 Basford 7b 332
    Cook James Smith
    Eaton Sarah Jane
    Freeman Edward
    Marsden Hannah

Might be on the wrong track but there is a James Cook and Ann in the 1901 census, living on the Basford area (counted as in Nottinghamshire in findmypast). This James was born abt 1836 in Leicestershire and was a coal miner.

Thanks for that. I am afraid it his son my granddad James S Cook who married Hannah Marsden on that date. G. Granddads wife died in early 1891 at Cotmanhay, Ilkeston her name was Betsy

    G. Granddads is on the 1891 census and calling himself James Smith at Cotmahnay Ilkeston Derbys.

    Cheers Esh

    Hello everyone,

Problem solved, I checked the indexes on the 1911 census and it looked promising. But when I checked it out it was the wrong person. I searched for all forms of spelling for a death for Isaac and found it in 1892, so he had a very short life compared to the other Isaac born in Leicestershire. His death was in 1892 and registered as James Smith Cooke. An " e " had appeared on the end of his name compared to that on his wife's record.

    Thanks for all the help
    Esh
