    I cannot see the first letter as a J..comparing it to the J for John..it looks more like a D..comparing to the D in dec below it...same for the second name it also looks unlike the J for John although the 3 letters after def look like osp leading to Joseph,have to admit Dames Dolfe is a strange name and nothing like it on 1841 census.
    Although on googling it, it is def a first name and quite popular with a lot of variants of it. Same for Dolfe not common but is a name and various variations inc Dolf short form of Adolph.

    Thanks Val - I do wonder if he had such a strange name and thus changed it to Alfred!

    well that is a possibility also, might not have liked being a Dames Dolfe.
