Thanks to you all for your thoughts ............. until it is proven otherwise I'll go along with the reasoning that there were two Sarah's ... 1) unknown and 2) the Sarah he married ......... seems to be the safest approach.

I have some further interesting detail regarding the Pantland family.
Elizabeth Ann,one of Roberts daughters, born 1836 married Herman Heinrich Meier 1864 at Clerkenwell but at marriage her name is recorded as Eliza Ann and the ref is 1b 992 but the husband is not shown amongst the others with that reference. However he is shown under his own name with a corrupted reference viz. 7*.
In 1871 their family is living at 5 Princes Sq. Tower hamlets and in 1876 the family sailed on the vessel 'Hastings' bound for Western Australia.
From the time of their marriage until embarking the family had lost several children including three boys.
Their misfortunes continued without relief after arriving and had altered their name to 'Myers' as daughter Rose married an Alexander Fox.
Rose was murdered by an axe blow and her husband was accused but was subsequently acquitted.
Much detail of this sad family appeared in WA newspapers as the 'Dalkeith' or 'Claremont' murder 1899
