    Default Gruwitch?

On freebmd there is a birth registration of an Alice Emily Gruwitch, this birth was registered in Portsea registration district June 1858.

I have never seen this surname before, hoping to find this person on the 1861 census, there were no individuals with that surname that come up.

Can anyone please help and see if they can find this Alice on any censuses? I am thinking perhaps a transcription error was made along the way and that is not the correct surname.
    Help appreciated.

In 1861 the family is indexed by Ancestry as GREEWITCH, and by FindMyPast as GREENWICH.

Possibly although in 1875 in Portsea there is a marriage of an Alice Emily L GRUWICH

Also try a wild card search on FreeBMD for GRUWI*CH (all events, no forenames, no district) which will provide a good clue to the origin of the name (poss. GRUWITSCH)

Kerrywood, I have not been able to look at the 1861 census that you mention, but I am presuming that Alice Emily is on there with her family.

Thanks Peter for explaining about the wild card search I haven't quite got to grips with that yet. I followed your instructions and it was brilliant revealing all the possibilities of that surname.

Terry, thank you very much for all the information you supplied, it does look like it is the same family.

Many thanks to you all for your help with this, I don't need anymore information about this family, only whether Alice Emily Gruwitch was on the 1861 census with her family.

So sorry, Ewan. I assumed you had census access but couldn't find them because of the mistranscription ...

Hello Kerrywood, no need to apologise just glad of some help. I looked on all the available indexes at censuses but I couldn't find the name Gruwitch, if I had found it I would of then visited the library to look at the full entry for it. So you have helped me in a big way by posting the details.

Thanks to everyone again for your help.
