    Default Drake Battalion R N Division R N V R WW1

My ancester A E Eyre was killed on 26/5/1918 whilst serving with Drake Battalion / Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Does any one know if there are any War Diaries serviving or any info that could be of help to me. I would love to know where he died, i know he was buried at Mesnil near the Ancre River.

    Thanks Graham.

Hello Graham. Have you seen this site:

    memorial-lincs.org.uk/html/arthur_e._eyre.html (put www in front)

I found the above by Googling 'Drake Battalion' and there are many entries. The above is from the Wartime Memories Project page. His surname is spelt Eye but click on the link and you'll find his story. Apologies if you already have this information.

Drake Battalion was part of the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division. Have a look at

    1914-1918.net/63div.htm

There are many references that turn up using a search engine.

The war diaries are held a TNA, beginning with WO95/3099 and continuing up to 3119 (3118 and 3119 are available on documents online)

RND service records can be downloaded from TNA - click here (There's a link from there to RNVR as well - it looks like there might be files under both RNVR and RND).

    Hi Graham
It looks as though A E Eyre was attached to the Drake Division, but was actually a Private in the 17th Battalion, Welsh Regiment. His Medal Card is available from TNA on-line. The cost is £2 to download a copy from their site. It seems that he had also served with the Army Service Corps.
