Default Please help, I can't even get started.

    Hi,
I was fostered at six weeks old and all I have is a tattered birth certificate. I was born in information about living persons deleted - see AUP . A Scottish woman who lived in Manchester. I have searched everywhere I can for her birth/deaths/marriages/issues but can't find anything. I was told that she had given birth to a girl names Carmen but I have no idea if this was in wedlock. Does any kind person out there have any advice, anything at all? Please, this is making me hate my computer screen.

Please accept our apologies but we have moderated your post. Names of persons living after 1900 are not allowed. There are a number of ways you can search for your birth family (mother, father, brothers and sisters).

Go through your local Social Services for counselling.
    Visit

You can use an agency to assist you, here are a few web sites that have been mentioned in the past.

Is it possible that my birth mother lied about her details on my birth certificate? Also the sites you provided are for adopted people. I was only fostered and never adopted. I received the counselling a few years ago and found out nothing more than I already knew, they censored anything that may have been useful. I have no wish to locate my birth mother, I am only really interested in forming a family tree and maybe get some sense of where I came from.

Although the details cannot be printed here the research format is still the same when looking for a person (your mother).
You have her name so have you searched through FreeBMD to see if you can find a likely birth for her?
Lets assume that she was aged between 17 and 30. I hope her surname is not Smith!!

Also try to see if there is a Carmen born say 10 years either side of your birth date. If she was born after 1912 then the mother's maiden name will be on the index. There may be possible mariages after your birth date.

I am afraid it can be a long slow haul. Good Luck

    Anything is possible. Sorry.

When you say you have searched everywhere you can does that include the online BMD indexes available at Ancestry etc or only on the FreeBMD web site? if the latter, this is far from complete as it is an ongoing project. This link may be of interest.

It may be worth taking out a trial subscription at one of the pay sites that has the indexes if you are not already a subscriber.

If the events took place in Scotland this may be of use

    Good luck.
