Question Sarah Kelly - Ireland to Manchester

Anyone have access to a book called "Directory of Irish-born People in Manchester in 1861". I am looking for my great-grandmother Sarah Kelly born 1853 in Queens County and married in Manchester in 1873.

    Any help appreciated

Have you tried to obtain it through an inter-library loan?

As I understand it, this publication consists of extracts from the 1861 census. If you have full access to the 1861 access, it's unlikely to tell you anything that you don't already know.

Thanks, I will try that. I can't seem to find anything through 1861 census as not much survives.

Have just tried the inter-library loan and it does not show on their lists.

Do you know if she had any younger siblings? The place of birth for them may give you a clue.

I'm not with you there. I wasn't aware that there were any very significant gaps in the 1861 census affecting that area.

There were plenty of problems with the 1851 but that's another story!

This item is available on CD-ROM from the Manchester and Lancashire FHS. From the information on their website, it looks as though they're now on a second edition.

Thanks very much everyone. I will try the CD. And no I don't know of any other members of the family.

Who did she marry? There are a couple of marriages listed for a Sarah Kelly that year in Manchester - if you send for the certificate, it should have her father's name and occupation listed. Then you can look for him in the 1861 census.

You do know her parents, I am sure you must,
Maybe we can find her in 1861 and 1871. There may be clues.

I don't know if you have seen it or if it will help but there is a web site for Laois.
