Baptism. Some time after the Birth.
Banns. Some time before the Marriage.
Burial. Some time after the Death.
BDM. Up to 3 months after the event.
Buy. Certificates to confirm the facts.
I spend days at Durham County Hall, records office, spool winding.
It's a long & lonely passtime, then someone said Join B-G it will make life easier.
So far so good, I can now just about use a computer. Have had lots of great advice to reach the sites that hold the records. My task is to avoid the Sting of having to Buy certificates for everything.
How detailed does the information need to be, before I add it to my tree.

Hi, Tony. It's good to hear you're feeling more comfortable on the forum and getting the hang of things!
All hobbies and leisure pursuits carry some necessary expenditure, and in my view certificates come at the top of the list. I think most serious researchers accept the need to purchase birth, marriage and death certificates for their own direct line of ancestry where these are available, but not necessarily for siblings.
I would say you need to be sure beyond reasonable doubt that the ancestors you enter into your tree are yours. Often the only way to get that assurance is by certificate, because anything else may involve some degree of guesswork. It is soul-destroying to find out at a late stage that you have been following a wrong line, when the purchase of a certificate earlier on might have put you right.
No doubt other members will have views on this too.

Thanks K... Jeneius...& notanot - your info. is always high quality. I would never have been aware of 'Family search pilot'
I have just looked on the site & I'm certain it's going to give me answer.
The spool winder will continue because as you say some records are almost as good as the certs.
I guess that it's time for me to spend my savings on the vital certs.
Those smilie faces appear to be excited, are there none for cool cats?

Wow, Notanotherminer, what an amazing site! Just browsed through the 146 pages for Lanchester 1855-1865 and came up with several baptisms and burials for my ancestors.
Just got to work through the rest of the info now...
