Yes I have considered it but I am not sure.

When he married Catherine Anne on June 14, 1852, he indicated that his father was James a General Dealer and there is no indication that his father was deceased. James jr. is also listed as a General Dealer as his occupation.

Given the type of occupation and particularly if both were absent from home, this scenario as to residence makes sense.

I will look again at the reference you found though!!

When Catherine Anne's father - Michael Dowden - died on May 2, 1866 he left an estate of nearly 3,000 GBP and James Hayes - her husband - was the Executor. That will might prove interesting.

In every census after his marriage, James indicated his place of birth as Westminster, Middlesex. Does anyone have an idea as to why this would be so, when on the surface prior to his marriage, the indication of a birth place is Bermondsey?
