    Default Medical examination before demob

Was it normal practice for a soldier to have a medical examination before returning to the UK at the end of his service in Europe and prior to demob?

I don't know if it was normal but my late husband returned from Italy in March 1946 and the result of a medical examination was recorded on his demob. papers. Regretfully, I do not have the papers although I saw them; they were kept by his mother.

My late father had a medical before he was demobbed. He always reckoned it was a better medical than the one he had when he was called up. As a result of it he was awarded a small disability pension.

I would imagine it was a routine thing.

Absolutely. It was to ensure that nobody could claim a greater degree of disablement than the authorities were prepared to admit.

Thank you Ladies and Peter - that's another piece of the jigsaw in place.
