I'm afraid 1861 doesn't help much with places of birth or ages, but here it is anyway:

The name I have for her husband, my great grandfather, is Isaac Joseph SOLOMON, which is the name he had when arriving in Australia in 1908 with their 6 children.
However we think this was not his original name.Isaac?? was born in Birmingham abt.1859.
Jay, do you have the name of Isaac's father from the marriage record?

    Hi Kerrywood
Unfortunately I have found it impossible to glean anything ie;marriage or the births of the 6 children from their time in south africa.

    Hi Christanel,
Isaac's father is listed as unknown on his death certificate however I think the names may have been Joseph and Rebecca. He was born in Manchester.
Isaac and Rebecca lived in Kensington NSW.Isaac lived in Australia for 24 years.
    The 6 children were:
Nathan b. abt 1898 Pretoria South africa
    Josephine Julia b. 1899
    Aaron b.1900
Louise b.1903 (my grandmother)born in Capetown
    Evelyn b.1905
    Henrietta b.1906
They arrived in Australia about 1908.I inquired but it appears they were not Naturalised.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Jay
The trouble is that any of the information you have about Isaac Joseph is only what he and his wife chose to tell people. He may not even have been born in Birmingham, he may have adopted Pauline's birth place.
I looked at births on FreeBMD 1857 - 1860 for Solomons in the whole country. There are four born in Birmingham, Elias, Charles Edward, Daniel and Walter Harry. The other one I picked out was Joseph Elisha born Pancras, purely because of his name. There were many more male Solomons born around the country in this period.
Later I will see if I can follow the 5 I have chosen through the censuses.
What makes you think Isaac Joseph changed his name? Is it the fact you can't find a birth for him?

    Hi Jay,
I've only just started checking these boards....
They didn't have to be naturalised in Australia IF both parents were British.....and if you check Australian National Archives you will find (who I think is Nathan) war records...States he was born in South Africa but a Natural Born British Subject... naa.gov.au (record search,,,,search as guest)
I don't know if you have seen the naa stuff or not but considering the years they were in SA for I would be looking for some type of "war" record for Isaac (maybe Boer)
