thank you Keith... this gives a sense of reality to the concept of one of these lost ancestors being in 'the military'.... so much to look for now that the threads are pointed out. This is the kind of boost that is so welcome. n

I have the same problem since regiments merged in my case mid-ulster royal field (reserve) artillery were formerly tyrone artillery(militia) and they seem to have been recruited alongside the royal inniskilling fusiliers (formerly royal tyrone militia) 1892-1896. just to give you hope. Have just found all this out on the national archive site at kew. there is a secure sticky on the military page by geoffers at the top which gives this info and helped me a lot.
