I looked for a marriage between a Arthur Alfred Swain and an Annie. The only thing that came close was this marriage on family search pilot.

    Groom's Name: William Arthur Swain
    Groom's Birth Date: 1871
    Groom's Age: 21
    Bride's Name: Annie Wells
    Bride's Birth Date: 1874
    Bride's Age: 18
    Marriage Date: 28 Aug 1892
    Marriage Place: Worthington, Sussex, England
    Groom's Father's Name: Arthur Swain
    Bride's Father's Name: John Wells

At first I dismissed it. Then I saw this ...

    Arthur Alfred William Swain
    Baptism/Christening Date: 17 Oct 1869
    Baptism/Christening Place: South Bersted, Sussex
    Father's Name: Arthur Swain
    Mother's Name: Caroline Ellen

I did a quick check. There was an Annie Wells born abt 1875 in Broadwater Sussex with father John in the 1881 census. Also an Arthur A Swain with parents Arthur and Caroline in the 1871 census in Bogner. On FreeBMD I also found a couple of Swain children births from 1911 onward in the East Preston reg district where the mother's maiden name was Wells. Couldn't see any births where the mother's maiden name was Stuart.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Olliecat! I did see the Annie Wells marriage and thought "Oh no, not another oddball"! but after following the same route you took I found she wasn't one of mine. So the 1911 census records are to be tossed as they are not the right one. I shall keep on looking. I do tend to get sidetracked - I spent a couple of hours browsing the Probate indexes - going back and forth to see if there were any that I needed for my lot of Stuart's.

    She sure is a mystery!
