    Default Maria HATHAWAY (nee Guy)

    Hi Everyone
I am trying to trace what happened to Maria Guy and like a recent post I made (different relative) Maria I think left for distant shores and was almost forgotten. Except she is thought to have been the custodian of our family bible. I am not about trying to get it back but she must have been a close family member. I wonder if any truth lies in the story.
Maria Guy was born on 12 Nov 1868 in Bristol, she married a Thomas Edwin Hathaway on 2 April 1888 in Bristol. I think she left with her family for Australia in 1908 and settled there but returned on a holiday.
My mothers brother Walter George (George) Godfrey also emigrated to Australia in 1926 aged 16 years and story goes he left the bible in his Aunts safe keeping when he arrived in Australia.
I guess I am trying to look at Australian records, although not sure where to start.
    From a cold Surrey

Yes I believe Maria came back for six months and stayed in Bristol and it would have been at this time she met young George and I quess the seed sown for him to emigrate. George was then 14 and he tried each year until he was accepted for emmigration at 16 just after his mother had died.
Maria must have done well in Australia to return for a six month holiday!

This might be them in Richmond ( a suburb of Melbourne) Victoria in the electoral rolls from 1908.

    1908, 17 Griffiths st, Richmond
    surname - HATHAWAY
    Maria, tailoress
    Thomas Edwin, labourer

Yes that does seem to be them. Thomas W was a son. I believe there were two daughters Florence and Rose who also went to Australia???? with them.
The 1901 census here, gives Maria's occupation as 'Trouser Hand Cloth' which matches.
    Thanks Elma
The deaths are the right ones and the names fit exactly.

but wait, there is more proof! our records are brilliant [smug smile]

    1914
the family are living at 5 Grattan pl, Richmond
    Thos Edwin Hathaway, warehouseman
    Maria, tailoress
    Florence, tailoress
    Thos William, lithographer

    1919 electoral roll
as above but with another added to the household
    Rose Augusta Hathaway, envelope mfr

    1924
    Thos Edwin Hathaway, warehouseman
    Maria, tailoress
    Florence Caroline, tailoress
    Rose Augusta Hathaway, envelope mfr

    1931 & 1936
    Thos Edwin Hathaway, warehouseman
    Maria, tailoress
    Florence Caroline, tailoress

The records are not grouped by household, so married daughters and husbands could be in the same household in the latter years.

Some more deaths, first two have the parents named correctly
Thomas William Hathaway, aged 67, reg HEID (Heidelberg) in 1955, reg no: 3897
Florence Carolin HATHAWAY, aged 74, reg KEW, in 1965, reg no: 6357

    mothers name is incorrect.
    Florence Augusta VERNON,
father Thos HATHAWAY, mother Emma LAKE
died aged 75, in 1942, reg Royal Park. reg no: 8945

Hopefully with all these names, a living relative will find this thread on a google, and contact you.

edited - Thomas Edwin and Florence are buried together at the St Kilda cemetery (details online)
Thomas William at the Springvale Botanical cemetery - details the same website. (Necropolis cemeteries)
Maria must be in their other cemetery which is not online (Melbourne General) but you can email for details.
The details will also be in the newspaper mentioned below.
