Hi Lesley,
Where on the 1881 Canadian census do you find John Marke? The person living with the Gamble family in Huron County in 1881 is a female Jane Marke born c1873, not a male John Marke born c1858.

I can find only three likelies on INCOMING passenger lists:
1) John Marks (est birthdate 1858), a labourer, travelling on the Thames, 21 June 1874, from London to Quebec. He is not with a typical sort of group that would indicate Home Children.
2) John Mark (est. birthdate 1858), a joiner, travelling 22 July 1877 on the Phoenicain from Glasgow to Quebec,m with final destination Toronto. He doesn't seem to be travelling with a typical Home Children group, either.
3) John Marks (est birthdate 1853), a labourer, travelling in the Scandinavian, 16 May 1870, from Liverpool to Quebec. This boy is one of a long list of young men aged 14-20, all listed as "labourers" and with different destinations. There are about 80 of them on the page, and the list is headed "Town Agents", but I have no idea what that means -- presumably that their passages were paid by "town agents" either at destination or at disembarkation point.
Anyone any ideas about this last?

I saw that too, Mary Anne - no idea either.
Catwoman, I'm having trouble seeing John's birth. Do you have the GRO document for John's birth in 1858? There's a John Marke's birth on FreeBDM 2nd quarter of 1858 vol 1b. page 33. Just wondering if it could be the John b 13 Mar 1858 to JOHN and MARY Marke, St. Pancras.
There are a few family trees on Ancestry following James and Eliza's family from 1861 through 1901. Oddly, there's no mention of a son John. Maybe a different family??

Hi Lesley,
I'll send you a pm. Oh, I couldn't get your first link to open.
At least we've ruled out the Huron "James".
