    Question Just wondering

My ancestor was sent to Canada as a home child, Is there a place I could search to see if he returned to England? I have him in the 1881 census in Ontario as living with a Robert Gamble and his wife Hannah in Huron, Ontario then it goes cold, his name was James Marke. I have looked on the Home children site for him going there but I did not find him.

Do you know how old he would have been Lesley?

There is a James Marke on the 1891 Census aged 53 in St. George in the East. He's a lodger so obviously on his own, or maybe just away because of work.

If you think this is a possible and can't check the Census let me know.

Thanks. That lets the one I found in 1891 out then as he is too old!

Will see if I can find anything else and let you know.

    I'm a bit confused now...sorry!

Is it James or John you are looking for as possibly being on the 1891 Census?

Is James the one aged 7 when he was sent to Canada in 1861?

    Hi Lesley,

To add to the confusion....I'm looking at the 1881 Huron Ontario census. Maybe I'm wrong, but does the handwriting look like [/B]Jane[/B] Marke? It states she's female, 8 b England. There's a James on pg 2 to compare.

I agree that the 1881 image reads Jane Marke, female. By 1891, her surname is Gamble. She is still with the family in 1901 and 1911:

1901 Census of Canada (line 50):

1911 Census of Canada (line 50 again):

As James (or is it John?) Marke is your ancestor, can you tell us where he was born? Do you have him on any census post-1881? Did he marry in Canada?

    Default John Marke

John was born in 1858 In Pancras , His parents were James Marke and Eliza church who married in February 4th 1855, I cannot find John Marke in any Canadian census apart from the 1881.
